One Day Course For Dramatic Voices

Through my work with those mid career who are finding they have a more mature and dramatic sound, I came to realise that there isn’t a lot of support at this stage in their life as a singer. Some have taken time out to have a family, some need to take on other work as the music business is so fragile , and therefore they don’t have regular performing opportunities or somewhere to sing, surrounded by their peers. It also provides an opportunity for singers to talk to each other about their experience moving into more dramatic roles, and how to manage their fuller sound. I have been very fortunate in my career as I had support from many people, and so I feel its my time to give something back and offer a place for these performers to come and sing with the voices they have now. It’s so important to not feel held back vocally.

What is the One Day Course for Dramatic Voices?

A small group course for around 6 singers (and a couple of observers), the one-day course for dramatic voices is an opportunity to present music you are working on in a supportive and productive closed-room setting. Alwyn works one-to-one with all singers in a 'masterclass' type format, tailoring each session to the individual singer's needs.

All courses are also supported from the piano by a leading coach in the dramatic repertoire.

Bring your new audition repertoire to try out in a welcoming group, test out a section of a new role you are considering, or revive some of your favourite pieces in a changing voice.

Perfect for a wide range of students

Recent courses have seen all of the following;

  • mid-career singers looking at new repertoire

  • singers returning after a break, perhaps due to family or other career commitments

  • singers navigating fach changes, either from one voice-type to another, or from lyric to dramatic

  • singers interested in improving their knowledge and skills in this specific repertoire

  • entry-level singers whose voices are specialised to the dramatic repertoire

  • and others!

A typical schedule for the day looks something like:

Welcome and a 'first sing'

everyone offers an aria or excerpt, just to get those pesky nerves out and test out the room.

First working sessions

singers take it in turns to work with Alwyn on their first piece

Second working sessions

singers can choose a second piece to work on, or can continue working on the first piece

Final Questions

covering anything you might want to know; ask Alwyn, the pianist, or the rest of the group!
