“Unquestionably in the very top flight of Wagnerians anywhere” (Opera), Alwyn Mellor made her debut at Seattle Opera in 2013 as Brünnhilde Die Walküre alongside Greer Grimsley, Stephanie Blythe, Stuart Skelton and Daniel Sumegi in Stephen Wadsworth’s production conducted by Asher Fisch (“The real discovery, however, is the “Brünnhilde” of British soprano Alwyn Mellor. She was the unknown quantity going into this cycle, and she has proved to be a stunning singer in this repertoire,“ wrote Jonathan Pell), followed by the same role in Siegfried and Götterdämmerung (“The high point of an impressive cast – a real triumph” wrote The Vancouver Sun). This performance was released on Avie CD in September 2014 (“Rare is the artist who brings to this marathon a sound of such roundness and luster, or a spirit so transparent, youthful and feminine,” wrote The Wall Street Journal). She returned to Seattle in Summer 2014 for the Speight Celebration Concert.
Wagnerian engagements have further included Senta Der fliegende Holländer for the Florentine Opera Company, Senta, Sieglinde Die Walküre and Brünnhilde Götterdämmerung for Opera North, Gerhilde Die Walküre at the Royal Opera, London, Brünnhilde Die Walküre – Siegfried for Longborough Festival Opera and at the Opéra national de Paris, Brünnhilde Siegfried for Oper Leipzig, Isolde Tristan und Isolde for Grange Park Opera, the Opéra national de Bordeaux and Washington National Opera and Brünnhilde Der Ring an einem Abend for the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. Beethoven: 1808 Concert / Orchestra of Welsh National Opera / Seen and Heard International
“Alwyn Mellor displayed visceral courage in her attack on the many exposed high entries in the concert aria ‘Ah! perfido’. It was ironic that a work which Beethoven had inserted into the programme mainly as a vehicle for a favourite soprano had in Vienna to be taken over by an understandably nervous understudy. There were no such fears here.”
Schönberg: Gurre - Lieder / Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra / The Sunday Times
"(Edward) Gardner was fortunate, too, with his Tove, the British soprano Alwyn Mellor. Mellor has an Isolde voice equal to everything Schoenberg throws at her: it soared over the Wagnerian orchestra with gleaming tone."
Brünnhilde: Siegfried / Symphony Hall, Boston / New York Arts
"Alwyn Mellor, who must have one of the most sumptuous voices of anyone singing Wagner today, combined with the profoundest sensitivity to Wagner’s poetry.”
